Notifications On Smartphone

Browser-Based Push Notifications Explained

Ever noticed those messages from apps that keep popping up on your mobile phone, those are called push notifications. These messages pop up even if your mobile phone is idle or the app isn’t opened.

Common examples of this are game scores or schedules for let’s say the NBA. If you’ve installed NBA League Pass on your phone, you will frequently receive push notifications. Why do the developers of those apps do that? Well, to put it simply, this is a method for the app to communicate with users to remind them to use the app.

Web-Based Push Notifications

Web-based notifications allow those that don’t have apps get the advantages of push notifications. Browser-based push notifications are sent by a website using a push code. This code is installed on the website and will trigger when the conditions are met.

A browser-based push notification consists of:

Title

Most brands just use their name in the title.

Content

This will be the body of the notification. Any message you wish to send to the user will be included in this part of the notification.

URL

Normally, you will see the web address of the website that is sending the push notification.

Icon

There are 2 types of icons included in this notification. One is the logo of the website sending the push notification and the other is the logo of the browser that you are using.

How Does it Work

All you really need is the web push code from a web push service (there are lots of web push services available on the internet). Once you have it, you can install that code on your website. Once a user sees that push notification, if he or she decides to click it, it will take that user to whichever page the push notification is set.

Advantages of Web-Based Push Notifications

No Contact Info Exchange

Most users usually avoid giving out their contact info/email address in order to avoid spam. The great thing about web-based push notifications that it doesn’t require users to give their contact info.

Convenience

These notifications are a convenient way to reach your site visitors since they don’t have to be on your website to access them. Once they give permission to receive your push notifications, they will receive them once they open their web browser.

Hard to Ignore

Compared to emails, push notifications are quite hard to ignore since they will really capture the user’s attention.

Multi-Platform Usability

Browser-based push notifications will work on all platforms as long as you have internet. It also works on all major browsers, so inter-operability is out of the question.

Increases Conversion Rates

Since push notifications are delivered timely and are very visible, you will be assured that the message you want to deliver to your prospect will have a higher chance of being read. This will then lead to a higher rate of conversion.
